Overview
Próximo runs the public bus service at the city of Faro (Portugal) and Algarve’s airport (4,2M passengers/year), moving ~46.000 local commuters and ~70.000 visitors yearly who travel into the city or to connect with train or intercity buses In 2023, they adopted UbiRider Platform for contactless payments which now account for 50% of all onboard transactions. With high tourist demand, contactless payments made boarding faster and easier for passengers — helping Próximo, the concessioned transport operator, keep on-time performance on track.
Challenges
• Slow onboarding due to cash payments; • Frequent and long queues to renew passes; • Cash-only payments hindered tourists.
Results
• Faster onboarding on stops with high passenger volume; • 25% of their customers use PICK app to renew passes, reducing queues 50% of payments are now with bank card; • Off-the-shelf Androids eliminated specialised hardware costs; • Enhanced punctuality and service reliability.
“Switching to UbiRider brought real advantages: simpler operations for us, more comfort and simplicity for our passengers. With digital payments and real-time location tracking, we made our service easier to use — and people noticed.”
Ana Ramalho, Operations
